Erik Truffaz est un trompettiste de jazz né en Suisse en 1960. Il a grandi en France, dans le pays de Gex. En 1990, Erik Truffaz forme un groupe avec Marc Erbetta, Marcello Giuliani et Maurice Magnoni. Le groupe remporte en 1993 le Prix Spécial du Jury au Concours national de jazz de la Défense. Il publie son premier disque sous son nom en 1994, Nina Valeria . C'est le mini The Dawn qui révèle Erik Truffaz au grand public. Son style évoque souvent celui de Miles Davis. Cependant la musique d'Erik Truffaz est un métissage des genres. S'appuyant sur une rythmique drum and bass, les morceaux oscillent entre la sonorité feutrée de la trompette de Truffaz et le rap anglophone du chanteur Nya invité sur l'album. La formule sera reprise sur l'album suivant Bending new corners et confirmera son succès. The walk of the giant turtle montre une orientation plus rock, avec notamment un rôle plus important laissé à la basse électrique nerveuse de Marcello Giuliani et à la puissance du toucher de Marc Erbetta. Sa popularité et sa reconnaissance sont concrétisées par un album électro : Erik Truffaz revisité sorti en 2001 sur lequel on retrouve plusieurs des titres de ses précédents albums repris par différents artistes. Lors de l'un de ses voyages au Mexique, Truffaz découvre Murcof (Fernando Corona), un compositeur mexicain de musiques electro/ambiant. Accompagnés de l'indo-anglais Talvin Singh, maître des tablas et compositeur d'electro world musique aux influences asiatiques, ils formeront en 2008 un trio. Erik Truffaz is a Swiss-born French jazz trumpeter, infusing elements of hip hop, rock and roll and dance music into his compositions. In 1990 he formed a jazz band called Orange and the following year won France’s prestigious jazz award, the Prix Special. As a leader of his self-named group, Truffaz recorded his first album Nina Valeria and appeared on stages throughout Europe, including the Montreux Jazz Festival. Since the mid-‘90s, Truffaz has been a mover-and-shaker on the European creative improvisational scene. He was introduced to North American audiences in 2000 with the CD The Mask, followed by Revisité, a DJ-dance remix album of The Mask. The trumpeter has been likened to Miles Davis , though Rolling Stone critic David Fricke writes, “Truffaz plays less like Miles than a jazz-rock [Brian] Eno, making rapturous atmospheres from a minimum of notes.” the remixes “affirm the depth and durability of Truffaz’s fusion: a jazz with brawn, soul and plenty of wide open space.” Truffaz and company create a compelling sound collage that dances and trances. nastier than smooth jazz and naughtier than straightahead, this is intelligent, uncompromising music happening in the now, played by musicians with, fertile imaginations and the courage of their convictions.
